Privacy Policy

We are committed to ensuring the privacy of our patient’s sensitive health information. We expect all staff to meet their obligations to collect, hold, use, and disclose health information in accordance with the:

  • Health Information Privacy Code 2020
  • Health (Retention of Information) Regulations 1996
  • Privacy Act 2020

The Health Information Privacy Code has been updated with effect from 1 May 2026. The update has introduced a new Information Privacy Principal – IPP3A. This principal requires agencies to take reasonable steps to notify individuals when personal information is collected indirectly (from a third party) unless an exemption applies.

Collection and Use of Health Information

We collect personal and health information from you directly and, where necessary for your care, from other healthcare providers and organisations involved in your treatment and healthcare. This may include hospitals, specialists, laboratories, pharmacies, Health New Zealand, ACC, other general practices, and support persons acting on your behalf.

We collect and use this information to provide healthcare services, coordinate your care, maintain accurate clinical records, meet our legal and professional obligations, and communicate with you regarding your health and treatment.

Your information may be shared with other healthcare providers and organisations involved in your care where authorised by law or with your consent.

You have the right to access and request correction of your personal and health information. If you have any questions about how we collect, use, store, or share your information, please contact the practice.

We have systems in place to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality:

  • A robust IT security policy keeps information secure.
  • Health information is stored within a secure and purpose-built practice management system.
  • Records being transferred reach the correct person.
  • Patient information is disclosed with consent and in accordance with legislation.
  • Our physical environment is arranged so that health information can’t be seen or overheard.
  • Health information is collected, used, and stored in accordance with legislation.
  • Significant privacy breaches are reported to the Privacy Commissioner | Te Mana Mātāpono Matatapu and the affected parties.

All new staff receive training about confidentiality, the Privacy Act 2020 and their corresponding obligations at the practice during their induction

What is HealthOne?

HealthOne is a South Island based secure electronic record that allows registered healthcare providers directly involved in your healthcare, to quickly access information such as your test results, allergies, medications, GP summaries and hospital information.

HealthOne adheres to the principles of the Privacy Act 2020 as well as the Rules set out in the Health Information Privacy Code 2020.  Access is only possible via an approved highly secure healthcare information network which is regularly audited and tested.
